The concept of Zodyak is rooted in the natural rhythms of our universe. The Earth's rotation on its axis, creating days, and the Moon's orbit around the Earth, generating months, served as the primary inspiration for this design. Zodyak consists of two interlocking rings, with the outer ring symbolizing the Moon's orbit and the inner ring representing the Earth's rotation. This simple yet profound design metaphorically represents the passage of time.
What sets Zodyak apart from other calendars is its three-dimensional, manual design. The interlocking rings can be adjusted to display the date, offering a tactile and engaging experience. When not in use, the compact design allows for easy storage in a small package. The calendar's minimalist aesthetic and practical functionality make it a desirable accessory for any desk.
Zodyak is designed for production using PLA and ABS plastics, making it suitable for both single and mass production. The product is packaged in a compact box measuring 110 x 110 x 32 mm, and when assembled, it stands at 106 x 106 x 116 mm. The user-friendly design requires no assembly, and the date can be easily adjusted with one hand.
The design process for Zodyak, which took place in Turkey in 2016, involved extensive research into the orbital motions of the Earth, Moon, and Sun. The designers aimed to infuse meaning into the simple act of displaying the date, resulting in a product that is both functional and thought-provoking. Despite the challenges of creating a minimal yet impactful design, Süzen and Gürel succeeded in producing a calendar that is visually stunning, practical, and space-efficient.
In conclusion, Zodyak is a testament to the power of design to transform everyday objects into works of art. Its unique concept, inspired by the celestial movements, its practical functionality, and its sleek, minimalist design make it a standout piece. Zodyak not only tells the date but also serves as a reminder of the intricate system that governs our universe.
